Sternal Precautions in Practice
For six to eight weeks the breastbone is healing bone. That means no lifting above a few kilograms, no pushing up from a chair with the arms, no pulling on furniture or bed rails to sit up, and a cough held against a pillow with both arms. Our nurses and attendants teach the log-roll method for getting out of bed and physically arrange the room so the patient is not tempted to break these rules for want of something within reach.
