Chemotherapy at Home in Mumbai
Not every chemotherapy protocol has to be given in a day-care ward. For several well-tolerated regimens, oncologists in Mumbai are happy for the dose to be delivered at home - provided the drug is prepared correctly, the nurse knows what to watch for, and there is a plan if something goes wrong.
That is the service we run. Your oncologist writes the order; we bring the trained hands, the monitoring and the paperwork to your flat in Dadar, Andheri, Chembur or wherever you live.
How a home infusion day actually runs
- Pre-dose check: temperature, pulse, BP, weight and a look at the latest blood counts
- Drug verification against the oncologist's written prescription - name, dose, sequence, dilution
- Cold-chain transport of the prepared cytotoxic drug from the pharmacy to your door
- Line access via existing chemo port, PICC or a fresh peripheral cannula
- Pre-medication first - antiemetics, steroids, antihistamines as charted
- Slow, timed infusion with the nurse in the room for the full duration
Safety, and where we draw the line
Cytotoxic drugs are not ordinary medicines. Our nurses use closed spill kits, PPE and sealed cytotoxic waste bags, and every home set-up includes an emergency box with adrenaline, hydrocortisone and antihistamines. We also say no when it is the right answer: first cycles of an unfamiliar regimen, high-risk anaphylactic agents, protocols needing continuous cardiac monitoring, and patients with unstable counts belong in a day-care unit, and we will tell you so plainly.
Monitoring during and after the dose
- Vitals recorded at fixed intervals through the infusion
- Watch for flushing, rash, breathlessness, rigors or back pain - the early reaction signs
- Extravasation protocol ready before the first drop goes in
- Two hours of post-infusion observation before the nurse leaves
- Written record handed to the family and shared with the treating oncologist
