Where the oncologist agrees the regimen is suitable, we bring the infusion to the flat - Vashi, Nerul, Kharghar, Belapur, Airoli, Seawoods or Panvel - with an oncology-experienced nurse present from the first drop to the last observation.
What we set up before the drug arrives
- Copy of the signed protocol, cycle number and dose calculation on file
- Recent CBC, LFT, KFT reviewed - counts below protocol threshold mean we postpone
- A clean, well-lit corner of the house prepared as the infusion area
- Drip stand, infusion pump where required, and an emergency drug box
- Sharps and cytotoxic waste containers brought in and taken back out
During administration
Pre-medication goes in first, then the cytotoxic drug at the prescribed rate. The nurse stays beside the patient the entire time - not in the next room. Blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation and temperature are charted at set intervals, and the cannula or port site is checked repeatedly for swelling or leakage. Any deviation, and the infusion stops before anything else happens.
After the cycle
- Two hours of observation before the nurse signs off
- Antiemetic and hydration plan written out for the family in plain language
- Red-flag list on the fridge: fever above 100.4F, bleeding, breathlessness, no urine
- Follow-up call the next morning and a nurse visit on day three if counts are expected to dip
