Dignity-First Care at Home
As the body weakens, simple daily tasks like bathing, dressing and using the washroom can become sources of embarrassment or distress. CareGlobal caregivers are trained to handle these moments with patience and discretion, so a person's dignity remains intact even as their independence changes.
We believe how care is given matters as much as what is given. A gentle tone, a knock before entering, and a caregiver who explains each step before touching someone all preserve a sense of self that illness can otherwise strip away.
What dignity-first care looks like in practice
- Asking permission and explaining each step before assisting
- Using screens or closed doors during bathing and toileting
- Speaking to the person directly, not just to family members present
- Respecting personal grooming preferences, from hairstyle to clothing choice
- Never rushing tasks that involve exposure or vulnerability
Personal hygiene and comfort care
Bed baths, oral hygiene, changing of linens and skin care are carried out with warm water, unhurried movements and constant verbal reassurance. For patients who are incontinent, our caregivers manage this discreetly and change soiled linens promptly to avoid discomfort and skin breakdown.
Involving the person in decisions where possible
- Asking about food and drink preferences even when appetite is small
- Letting the person choose where they want to sit or rest during the day
- Respecting requests about who they want present in the room
- Honouring cultural or religious practices around routines and rituals
Training our caregivers specifically for this stage
Not every caregiver is naturally comfortable with end-of-life dignity care, so we select and train ours specifically for it. This includes practical technique as well as guidance on tone of voice, patience, and reading non-verbal cues from someone who may no longer be able to speak clearly.
